When you’re talking about cigarettes, the most common response is that they’re not good for you.
But research suggests it might actually be better for your lungs.
In a recent study, researchers found that when smokers try to quit, they actually use more tobacco than if they quit smoking.
“We found that the tobacco waterpipe was actually more likely to contain nicotine than cigarettes,” lead author Dr Daniel Hynes said.
“(When smokers) try to stop using tobacco, they use less waterpipe, which is the least effective means of stopping.”
The study, published in the Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, looked at 1,000 smokers over a 12-month period.
The participants were divided into two groups.
One group used a waterpipe to smoke and another group used an electronic cigarette to smoke.
Participants in the waterpipe group were exposed to more nicotine than those in the electronic cigarette group.
However, the electronic cigarettes were also exposed to fewer harmful chemicals, such as carbon monoxide.
Dr Hynes says that is because of their “lighter” design.
While the electronic devices use a heating element to heat up water, the water pipes use a small flame that heats the air.
That’s why, in contrast to tobacco pipes, the vapor from an electronic device has less nicotine.
As a result, the researchers found the electronic waterpipe contained a lower level of harmful chemicals.
For example, a nicotine level of 0.8 per cent of waterpipe smoke was found to be equivalent to 0.4 per cent for tobacco smoke.
Dr Hues said while there are some devices out there that deliver a nicotine concentration of 10 per cent, “it’s still not high enough.”
“There are some tobacco water pipe models that are more than 100 per cent nicotine,” he said.
“So you might be able to get nicotine from a tobacco pipe.”
Dr Hys said that while the electronic vapor may be less harmful, it’s still dangerous.
He recommends switching to a water pipe.
“It’s very important for smokers to understand that they are using a harmful substance,” he explained.
If you do want to quit smoking, Dr Hynes advises you should use a water-based product.
“[You] don’t need to use a cigarette-based pipe because it has less harmful chemicals,” he advised.
